Questioning Everything

Another great DailyOM message I recently ran across (and then Paigeee brought it to my attention again...thanks, P!).  This subject seems to really strike a chord with me of late.  Enjoy! (and check out DailyOM.com for some great daily words of wisdom!)

Keeping Our Minds Supple
Questioning Everything

"A lot of people feel threatened if they feel they are being asked to question their cherished beliefs or their perception of reality. Yet questioning is what keeps our minds supple and strong. Simply settling on one way of seeing things and refusing to be open to other possibilities makes the mind rigid and generally creates a restrictive and uncomfortable atmosphere. We all know someone who refuses to budge on one or more issues, and we may have our own sacred cows that could use a little prodding. Being open-minded means that we are willing to question everything, including those things we take for granted.

A willingness to question everything, even things we are sure we are right about, can shake us out of complacency and reinvigorate our minds, opening us up to understanding people and perspectives that were alien to us before. This alone is good reason to remain inquisitive, no matter how much experience we have or how old we get. In the Zen tradition, this willingness to question is known as beginner’s mind, and it has a way of generating possibilities we couldn’t have seen from the point of view of knowing something with certainty. The willingness to question everything doesn’t necessarily mean we don’t believe in anything at all, and it doesn’t mean we have to question every single thing in the world every minute of the day. It just means that we are humble enough to acknowledge how little we actually know about the mysterious universe we call home.

Nearly every revolutionary change in the history of human progress came about because someone questioned some time-honored belief or tradition and in doing so revealed a new truth, a new way of doing things, or a new standard for ethical and moral behavior. Just so, a commitment to staying open and inquisitive in our own individual lives can lead us to new personal revolutions and truths, truths that we will hopefully, for the sake of our growth, remain open to questioning."

Yikes.....

Wow.  I can't believe it has been so long since I've posted.  Poor little blog.  Then again, it's not really that surprising...I've been super-busy and somewhat down and unfortunately my blog usually takes one of the first hits.  I HAVE been on Facebook more often lately (scary thing, that Facebook!...I think it might just take over the world...)  But I'm here now, and hope to be posting more often.

So a quick run-down:  Just closed my latest play "Tent Meeting" at Theatrical Outfit (I'll post a few pictures of this soon).  This was absolutely an amazing experience.  The talent I got to work with and the challenges this play provided me are indescribable.  Thanks to EVERYONE who came to check it out!

I filmed a small role (more than one line!...several, actually!) in a Lifetime movie starring Julia Ormand called "The Wronged Man."  A very cool story based on the true story of a man falsely convicted of rape and released 20 years later due to a DNA test.  Was very cool to work with Julia and a great experience overall.  "The Wronged Man" is due to air on Lifetime in November 2009.

I'm still working at the Temple, although less hours.  I'm still acting like crazy, but also starting to wonder if maybe there might be other things I'd like to try (not sure what, exactly...but I'll keep you posted).

My beautiful sister came to visit a couple weeks ago...FABULOUS FABULOUS time we had.  We even went on a hot air balloon ride!  LOVE YOU PAIGEEE!

And if that weren't enough, my Dad and Lequice are visiting me as I speak (er, write)!  They got to check out my last two performances of "Tent Meeting" (the first time Dad's ever seen me perform!)  Talk about an emotional experience!  Am so very very grateful for family right now.

Am headed to Florida this week for a much needed vacation.  Then will come back to Atlanta to finish the Jesus show (the Christian sitcom that films in Asheville, NC) and then I'll start rehearsals for my next show.

Thanks to everyone who keeps hounding me for updates...I can get pretty bad at communicating so it's nice to have you all holding me accountable!

Keep sending me your updates!  More to come very soon...I promise!

Where does the time go?!?!.....

Seriously, is it really December 1st already??  Unbelievable.  Well, let's see...quick update:

We finished up Dracula (awesome experience).

My Mamacita and Joe came through Atlanta and we had a MARVELOUS time.

The children's movie I did a while back, Mandie and the Secret Tunnel, premiered at the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta (click here for pictures).  Lots of fun and a super turn out!

I had such a lovely Thanksgiving traveling to different friends' houses throughout Atlanta...a HUGE thank you to you all!

We've started rehearsals for the Christmas show, It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.  We open this Wednesday and I can't wait!

I need updates from all of you as well...so drop me a line and let me know how things are going!

Lots of love!

Dracula

_CB31408 Am posting some photos of Dracula.  We're having a very successful run.  Two weeks down, two more to go!  Has been a challenging show (to say the least!), but an absolute blast.  I'm so thankful to be working with such an awesome awesome cast.  There are just a few tickets left for the rest of the run, so if you want to check it out, get your tickets fast! www.auroratheatre.com

Yearbook Yourself!

Shayne Kohout 1952  Shayne Kohout 1966 HAAAAA!!!  This is so funny!  You gotta try this:  go to www.yearbookyourself.com and upload your photo to see what your yearbook picture might have looked like back in the day...You can pick any year from 1952 to 2000...Your new yearbook picture is added to your "Homeroom" and you can invite others to yearbook themselves...I am totally in the wrong decade!

New stuff...

Well, fall is definitely kicking off with a bang!  Between the High Holy Days at the Temple and rehearsals for Dracula, I kinda feel as if my head might fly off any minute now...(I am actually decapitated in the show...fun stuff!)  But I'm loving all the action.  I'm still trying to get pictures up of Katie's wedding, so that should be up soon.  I did manage to update my favorite books and songs of late, so check those out and share with me some of YOUR favorites as well.  More very soon!...

In case you blinked...

...or even if you didn't, you probably had a hard time seeing my "appearance" on Army Wives.  It was pretty disappointing.  I think I was on screen for a total of about 3.3 seconds.  And you never could see my face.  Oh well...thanks to everyone who tuned in anyways!  At least I got a nice paycheck and a credit!

Starting rehearsals for Dracula next week.  It runs from October 7 through November 2, with a possible extension.  So if you're in the area, make sure you check it out!  Spoooooooky!!!

More soon...gotta fill you all in on the fabulous wedding I was in this past weekend.  I love you Katie and Park!!!

Ho Hum.....

I'm feeling blah...Just arrived in Asheville to film the Jesus show for the next few days...but I really don't want to be here.  I'm grateful for the work, I'm making money, I'm in a gorgeous place, I'm with some great people...but I'm just not feeling it, you know?  My heart's not in this job, it never really has been, and that always makes things a bit more challenging and less satisfying.  I feel like a hypocrite, and I don't like that feeling.  But despite differences in beliefs, I have to trust that I'm impacting someone, somewhere, in a positive way and putting my talents to use.  It's a good lesson to learn, though...listening to your heart, being true to yourself, being grateful for what you have.

Can't believe the summer's over...but I'm so ready for a new season!  If anyone has any great stories about the summer fill me in!

In one of the stars
I shall be living
In one of them
I shall be laughing
And so it will be
as if all the stars
were laughing
when you look
at the sky at night.

Grand Theft

Well, SHIT...sorry, but that's really the only word that comes to mind right now...the last day and a half have not been fun.  I walked outside Tuesday morning to go to work and my car was gone.  Totally gone.  Stolen right off the side of the street, in front of my place.  Nice.  The car, even though I loved it, is really just a car.  But it didn't help that I practically live out of my car so I lost some valuable and sentimental stuff.  Just really sucks.  But then later in the afternoon Todd called to let me know that they were putting Troy on Comfort Care (they took him off everything except morphine).  There was just nothing left they could do.  So now it's just a waiting game.  Sure puts things in perspective.  Yeah, having your car stolen sucks, but watching a loved one pass away...feels like they're being stolen away from you too.
